So my counter says I wrote 488 words. I would say that’s not precisely true. Actually, I went through a scene the end of which I decided to change drastically, made a bunch of line edits, and then cut a bunch from the end and rewrote it much shorter. When I’d finished, the result was 488 words fewer than the original. So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Am I? Sticking to it, that is. I’m going to be doing some more editing in the next few days. I hate the idea of getting bogged down with editing the beginning of a story before I’ve written it through, because Lord knows I’ve got stories with shiny polished beginnings, sketchy endings, and no middles at all, and I’ve been trying to break that habit. But in this case, I know I was having problems moving on because I felt like there were things I needed to change in the beginning and I was just digging a deeper hole for myself by continuing, if that makes any sense.
Kettle, who was kind enough to read through 150 pages yesterday– more than I feel ethused about doing for myself, btw– said last night that she thought I needed the time off to get some perspective, and I think she was right. Because part of what happened last night was that I looked at that breakfast scene and saw that it was on page 50 and said: What the hell goes on for 50 pages before we get to this part? So some cutting needs to happen before that too.
Let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen with the other scenes that happened when Kettle and I looked at the breakfast scene.
Kettle: I think you could just cut the whole scene, and take the few important points and put them somewhere else.
Pot: [takes a moment to get over initial horror] Well, while I don’t like where it went at the end, there are things I liked about it, and I think it was important because it showed blahdy blahdy blah.
Kettle: Ok, what did you like about it?
Pot: [Goes scrolls through the scene and proceeds to list most of it as stuff I like about it and want to keep.]
Kettle: [Probably banging her head on the desk.]
Let’s hope the other scenes slated for trimming go a bit better.
Anyway, that’s what’s going on in WOTM world. What’s going on in yours?
